The team is real. The build is on.

For three months this newsletter has talked about people we couldn't yet introduce — a founding CTO in final conversations, advisors moving through paperwork. July is the month that changes. Our Founding CTO is signed and named below, three advisors are formally on the board, and the closed beta moved from design into actual backend build.

One more thing before the field report. A lot of what's gone right these past months traces back to people outside the company — the ones making the right introductions, opening doors, and giving us direct, sometimes uncomfortable feedback on what we're building. You know who you are. This month's progress is partly yours.

Where we made ground this month.

1. TEAM · FOUNDING CTO

   Meet Bryant Nichols.

   After months of deliberate interviewing, our Founding CTO is official: Bryant Nichols has signed on as co-founder and CTO. Bryant brings more than 20 years across national security software, cloud platforms, AI, and digital forensics — building mission-critical systems for government customers — along with multiple startups founded and built from concept to market. He owns the platform architecture from here, and the pace of the build has already changed.

2. TEAM · ADVISORY BOARD

   Three advisors, formally aboard.

   The advisory paperwork we flagged in May is complete. Joining Defense Nexus as strategic advisors: Taylor Grant — capital and corporate growth: founder of Fox Three Partners, a private investment firm, with prior chapters at Goldman Sachs investment banking and ADS, Inc. — and 11 years before that as a Navy fighter pilot. Malcolm Lotzof — company building at scale: four technology companies built and sold across his career, most recently INXPO, the virtual-event and webcasting platform he founded and led to acquisition. John W. Suh — technology and innovation: Stanford PhD in mechanical engineering, founder of Hyundai Motor Group's New Horizons Studio and its corporate venture arm CRADLE, now teaching the next generation of engineers in an AI-driven era. This board was built deliberately. The founding team carries the defense and special operations experience — what we needed in the corner was everything else: capital discipline, company building at scale, and deep technology judgment. That's exactly the experience these three bring, and each of them chose this mission when their time could have gone anywhere.

3. PRODUCT · CLOSED BETA

   The backend build has started.

   The closed beta moved from design into engineering this month. Work is underway on the backend that will carry the first cohort — the foundation for verified profiles, matching, and the workflows the platform runs on. The closed beta cohort is forming now, and requests remain open at defensenexus.ai.

4. PRODUCT · PLATFORM SCOPE

   The Opportunity Engine moves up.

   A deliberate scope decision this month: the Opportunity Engine — designed to surface contracts, roles, partnerships, and teaming — joins the initial release rather than following it. The feedback drove this one. Conversation after conversation kept confirming that connection alone isn't the outcome this community needs; the opportunity on the other side of the connection is. So the platform launches with all three engines working as one system.

5. COMMUNITY · THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PROGRESS

   This month runs on introductions we didn't ask for.

   The most valuable pattern of July wasn't a metric — it was the number of people who reached out unprompted with an introduction, a candidate, a potential partner, or hard feedback on the product. That network of supporters has become a genuine force multiplier for a small team, and it keeps validating the thesis: this community shows up for infrastructure built for it.

Where the energy goes from here.

1. 01

   Build.

   With Bryant in the seat, the priority is engineering velocity — standing up the backend foundation that carries the first cohort onto the platform.

2. 02

   Recruit the right 150.

   The initial target for the closed beta is 150 users — sized to give the cohort the diversity the platform needs from day one: operators, contractors, founders, and mission-support organizations, all represented. Getting that mix right matters more than filling seats fast. Requests are open at defensenexus.ai.

3. 03

   Keep the community conversations going.

   The introductions and feedback loops that powered July stay a top priority. Every conversation continues to sharpen the platform.
